Have you ever wished your iPhone screen recordings were sharper, clearer, and more professional-looking, you're in the right place. This article details methods for improving screen recording quality for mobiles, and includes informative explanations to tell you what matters.
You may have heard of resolution and FPS before when people discussing video quality. Samely, they are also important for screen recording. Beyond the basics, there are more to explore. So, what else impacts screen recording clarity?
● Resolution
When you see numbers expressed 1920×1080, it denotes resolution - the number of pixels. Resolution is the basic of video clarity. The larger the number, the more details there are so you can see the image’s sharpness.
iPhone resolution typically ranges from 640x1136 to 1290x2796, varying by model.
Note: Device-matched resolution is best; using higher-than-supported resolutions is ineffective even with third-party apps and a resource drain.
● Frame Rate
Common values are 30fps and 60fps. It's key forr recording fluency which impact perceived motion continuity. If you record at 30fps and need to post edit the material, like slow-motion replay, you will see screen stuttering and lost details.
● Video Bitrate
Video bitrate is the amount of data processed per second in a file. If you see kbps or Mbps, it refers to bitrate. High bitrate ensures sharp visuals, ideal for detailed recordings such as gameplay and tutorials. A proper encoding setting can avoid compression artifacts like blurring.
● Others
The iPhone's CPU, GPU, and memory resources impact the recording process. And running many apps in the background can reduce the recording performance.
Model | Max Resolution with Supported Frame Rate | Quality Level |
iPhone 16 Pro & Pro Max | 3840×2160 with 60 fps | 4K/Ultra HD |
iPhone 13/14/15 Pro & Pro Max | 2796×1290 with 60 fps | 2K/Quad HD |
iPhone 12/13/14/15 & Plus | 2778×1284 with 60fps | 2K/Quad HD |
iPhone 11/X/XS/XR/XS Max | 2688×1242 with 60fps | 2K/Quad HD |
iPhone 6s/7/8 & Plus | 1920×1080 with 30-60fps | Full HD |
Tips: How to choose the right resolution for screen recordings?
1) HD Screen Recording (1280×720 to 1920×1080): suitable for tutorials, app demos, and social media content. Good balance of quality and file size for streaming and sharing.
2) 2K (QHD) Screen Recording (Around 2560×1440): suitable for gaming videos, professional app demos.
3) 4K (UHD) Screen Recording (3840×2160): suitable for film editing, ads, and play on projectors/TVs. Best for post-production zooming or cropping without losing quality.
When using the built-in screen recorder of iPhone, please note that there is no built-in screen recorder settings on iPhone. Your mobile will record at its highest native resolution and 60fps by default.
Don't confus the Record Video in Settings > Camera. It is not for screen record but to control the rear camera's video recording.
However, you can follow these steps to provide a better recording environment and make high quality video.
Since the video quality is limited by the device itself, and iPhone's native screen recorder is the optimal solution to capture device-adaptive resolution. Use latest iPhones can enjoy the best performance so to bring a better screen recording quality.
Low iPhone storage (under 5GB) can cause the system to terminate screen recording to prevent file corruption. Notably, iOS screen recording requires temporary space for rendering and audio sync, even if the recording isn't saved.
iOS devices use H.264 or HEVC to ensure clarity. Here is a reference to help calculate storage space:
A 1-minute screen recording at 2532×1170 with 60 fp is about 100-200MB.
When you close the background apps, the iPhone will free up CPU & GPU resources. So, it can avoid frame rate drop or lag caused by insufficient performance and bring a good quality recording.
If your device overheats, it can slow down the CPU/GPU, make rendering less efficient, and result in unstable frame rates (like dropping from 60 to 30 fps) or blurry moving images. You can set a medium brightness for iPhone screen.
If you're saying recording with the iPhone camera, you can go to Settings > Camera > Record Video, and then choose a resolution.
Using a high resolution is the key. Typically, you can use 4K at 60 fps for the sharpest and smoothest video if your iPhone model supports it.
Moreover, you can use the Slo-mo mode in Settings > Camera. It allows you to record at 240fps and gives more details for per second recording.
