No sound when screen recording on smartphones is a common issue. Xiaomi and its affiliated mobile brands - Redmi and POCO are no exception. This problem often occurs during recording a video call, such as on Teams, Google Meet, WhatsApp, and others.
If you're a user of Xiaomi and suffer no sound when using the screen recorder, you come to the right place.
In this article, I will explain the causes and solution to fix it.
The no sound issue appears frequently on the Redmi Note series and seems to be related to MIUI versions, particularly MIUI 13 with Android 12.
(Learn more: MIUI is a custom Android-based operating system developed by Xiaomi and now has been replaced by HyperOS.)
Content protected by DRM (Digital Rights Management) may not allow screen recording with audio. Apps like Netflix and Spotify will use DRM technology to protect their licensing and copyright. Even if the device's settings are correct, these apps may prevent audio capture.
Some meeting apps like Zoom, Teams and Google Meet also deter audio capture during recording meetings. This is to better protect user privacy.
This is mainly refers to parental control apps. They may interfere with the screen recorder's audio recording.
Other Factors:
Sound source setting, accumulated cache and junk files, screen recorder permissions, phone models do not support internal audio recording (e.g. Xiaomi Redmi Note 7, Android One Series, Poco F1, and some running Android 9 and below); etc.
When Bluetooth headphones or a speaker is connected, the built-in screen recorder may fail to capture system sounds due to wrong audio routing, interference, or codec incompatibility.
When using the built-in screen recorder of your Xiaomi or Redmi phone, you can check if the sound source setting is correct. You should select microphone, or both mic and system sound.
Here are checking steps based on mobile phone models.
1) For Xiaomi 14T/Xiaomi 14T Pro/Xiaomi 13 Series/POCO X6 Pro:
Go to Settings > Additional Settings > Screen Recorder > Sound Source > select Both.
2) For Redmi Note 9, 10, 11, 12 series/Redmi K30 Series/Xiaomi Mi 10 series/ Xiaomi 11, 12 Series:
Go to Tools folder > Screen Recorder > tap the gear icon to open "Settings" > Sound source > select Microphone.
3) For POCO F1/X3/M3/F3:
Open the Quick Settings panel > Screen Recorder > Settings > Sound source > select Microphone.
This solution is for phones that do not support internal audio recording, such as devices using pre-MIUI 11, certain regions, and running Android One.
You can check if your device has this option: Screen Recorder > Settings > Sound source > System sounds.
If you can not see it, your phone will have no audio when screen recording and you should use third-party app like XRecorder or AZ Screen Recorder to enable microphone recording.
Suppose you have already used a third-party screen recorder but still no sound, permission issues are the likely cause.
Starting in Android 10, the system restricted screen reading in order to prevent silent access. This requires applications to obtain user consent so to access a device's screen content.
You can go to Settings > Apps > Manage apps > Permissions to check if microphone is enabled.
Some apps will ask you to install additional helper or connector tools to obtain permissions, please install with caution.
Other apps using the microphone (e.g., voice recorders, VoIP apps, parental control apps) might interfere with the screen recorder. Just remove them or close any background apps.
Battery Saver might limit the screen recorder’s performance.
You can go to Settings > Battery & performance > App battery saver > Screen recorder and set it to No restrictions.
As mentioned earlier, many video or streaming apps block screen recording as well as the audio because of DRM and privacy. In this situation, whether you use the native or third-party recorders, you can not record content with audio.
The best solution is to visit the official platform with your account logged in, and then screen record on your PC.
Note: Please first review the terms of use of the platform. Otherwise, you may have legal disputes.
